How to Maintenance and Care for Your New Cedar Fence

Congratulations on your new wood fence! You will need to know the best way to keep it looking it’s best for years to come. Here are the top tips for fence maintenance so you can keep your fence looking like new. A maintained fence will last many years to come. Wooden fences are highly valued for their curb appeal and natural durability. Regular fence maintenance is important and will extend the longevity of the fence.

Annual Maintenance Program and Maintenance Tips

We offer an annual maintenance program for our cedar fence installations.  For $400.00 a year we will provide necessary gate adjustments, check posts and screws, and replace up to 10 pickets twice a year. 

To extend the life of your fence, address these areas:

  • Adjust the gate in the Spring – as a reminder, gate adjustments and leveling are normal care and maintenance items that the homeowner is responsible for.
  • Oil gate hinges and tighten the screws once a year.
  • Do not let the gate swing in the wind. Keep it secured.
  • Deter children from swinging on the gate.
  • Re-tamp and realign the loose posts.
  • Do not stack or mount any objects or material near your fence.
  • Avoid using weed trimmer at the base of the post.

Maintenance Recommendations

Staining and water sealant is vital!  While staining and water sealant is not required, it is a very important wooden fence maintenance tip that should not be overlooked. Water sealants protect your wood fence from moisture, providing an excellent barrier against wooden fence deterioration. Staining maintains the fence’s nice, clean look, fighting against signs of wear to the fence.

Make Repairs as needed.  Wood fence maintenance includes making repairs when needed. If any cracks or other blemishes are found on a wood fence, it allows moisture to soak into the wood and may cause rotting. Make sure repairs to your fence are completed as soon as possible to ensure the longest life for the fence.

We will warranty our installation labor for one year from date of completion.  There is not a manufacturers warranty on natural wood fencing.  The natural characteristic of all wood species which are warpage, waining, splitting, and grain raising.  These characteristics are to be expected.
